We know that studies have shown that over time, drinking hard liquor excessively can cause a number of very serious health problems, and in no way are we denying, or making light of these facts but, we like to find the silver lining in every cloud.  And studies have also shown that some of the most popular alcoholic beverages also offer some pretty amazing health benefits if consumed in moderation. So here we are, ranking how healthy your favorite alcoholic beverages are for you. Now you’ll be armed with some facts, just in case you get into a debate about how healthy your old fashioned is for your immune system.

1. Tequila

Tequila has numerous health benefits.  Agavins, the natural sugars found in tequila, are non-digestible (meaning they act like fiber) and won't raise your blood sugar levels. Furthermore, the sugar is shown to help lower cholesterol and can help you lose weight. Yep, you read that right, tequila can fit in perfectly with a weight loss plan if enjoyed in moderation. But don’t go adding it to your protein shake, may not give you the desired results.

2. Brandy

Brandy contains vitamin C (which doesn’t stand for Christian Brothers) and heart-healthy antioxidants.  The polyphenol compounds in brandy have beneficial effects on the endothelial lining of our blood vessels, and research shows that it can help prevent heart attacks and stroke, as well as fight obesity.  Brandy’s antioxidants also neutralize the negative effects of free radicals, which destroy healthy cells in the body. One shot of brandy provides the same amount of antioxidants as your daily recommended vitamin C intake, which produce some anti-aging effects.

3. Gin

Gin is made from juniper berries, which are full of 87 distinct antioxidant compounds.  These ‘super berries’ also contain compounds called flavonoids, which have anti-aging properties, heart-healthy properties and can help lower blood sugar.  While other alcoholic beverages have been shown to lessen your quality of sleep, the juniper berries in gin actually have a positive impact on brain chemistry, encouraging restorative sleep. Gin and Chamomile anyone?

4. Whiskey

One serving of whiskey contains as many antioxidants as a glass of wine.  Try taking a shot of whiskey as your next "fighting off/preventing a cold" excuse.  Whiskey also contains ellagic acid, which known for fighting off cancer by absorbing rogue cells.  But some whiskeys are better than others. To get the most health benefits from whisky, drink single malt — it contains more antioxidants and ellagic acid than blended whiskeys, which combine several malts with wheat and/or corn.
